The control plane we wanted to run ourselves
Wäg is the self-hosted control plane for AI agents and applications, built by Bitkaio Ltd. One endpoint sits in front of every model, tool and agent an organization runs, and decides who may use what, at what cost and under which rules: identity, budgets, policy, tool-call approvals and a verifiable record of every decision, with nothing phoning home.
Why we built it
Most AI gateways began as HTTP reverse proxies with a model list, and AI has moved past them. Agents now call tools, spend money and act on behalf of people; models run with cloud providers, on an organization’s own servers, on laptops and inside mobile apps. A proxy can forward that traffic. It cannot say which agent acted for whom, hold a risky tool call until a named person approves it, keep one budget across teams, or show an auditor afterwards what happened.
So we built Wäg as a control plane, not a proxy, in Rust. Identity, budgets, policy, approvals, routing and evidence apply the same way to chat, embeddings, vision, audio, video, realtime, agents and MCP tools, and Wäg Edge extends the record to models on laptops and in mobile apps. Self-hosted by design, Apache-2.0 at the core, and honest about what it does.
What we believe
A control plane, not a proxy
We start from the request as a domain object: who is asking, on whose behalf, under which policy and at what cost. Every decision is made before a token is spent, and every decision is recorded.
Self-host first, no phone-home
Your keys, your models, your logs, your perimeter. Wäg runs entirely inside your infrastructure and never calls home. Air-gapped deployment is a first-class path.
OSS is the product
The production path is Apache-2.0: HA, routing, caching, failover, budgets, guardrails, MCP, agent identity, tool policies and approvals, jobs, residency and the evidence ledger. Enterprise adds identity-provider integration, audit and evidence packs, agent payments, content marking, device enforcement and support.
Honest engineering
We publish benchmarks with their methodology, sign every image, and keep our marketing claims aligned to what the product actually does today.
About Bitkaio Ltd
Bitkaio Ltd is a software company registered in the United Kingdom — European, outside the EU — building independent, self-hostable infrastructure for teams that take data sovereignty seriously. We say that plainly because sovereignty assessments should be made on facts. It also matters less than it might: nothing about a Wäg deployment depends on where we are registered, because the software runs in your infrastructure under Apache-2.0 with no channel back to us. We hold the copyright to Wäg and maintain it as open source, with a commercial Enterprise edition that adds identity, audit and evidence, and support.
